Lancet Commission report 2024 indicates even stronger links between lifestyle and dementia risk
On 31 July 2024, the Lancet Commission on Dementia prevention, intervention, and care published an update to its 2020 report.
The 2024 update indicates an increased estimation of dementia attributable to modifiable risk factors from 40% to 45%. The Commission has also identified two new modifiable risk factors, vision loss and high LDL cholesterol, increasing the number of modifiable risk factors from 12 to 14.
In their comment to the new Lancet Commission report, Professor Miia Kivipelto et al. welcome the recognition of advancement in the science of modifiable factors for dementia prevention, and stress the need for further randomized controlled trials and greater diversity in trial cohorts, to accurately tailor prevention strategies for the individual.
Multinational, multidisciplinary initiatives such as World-Wide FINGERS are driving coordinated research efforts, data harmonization, and joint analyses that can provide evidence to identify effective, feasible, and equitable preventive strategies globally. This is important for both individual actions and population level initiatives.
